[COFFEE] = Hopscotch House Blend. The new (temporary) standby. 4.5/5.
We traveled a few weekends back - but sadly, no coffee shops worthy of mention from Charleston, WVA.
I will mention a favorite in Harrisonburg, VA, called Black Sheep, since that was a stop on the drive home. They serve Red Rooster, an award winning roaster from Floyd, Virginia and some other amazing coffees. If you’re in (or passing through) Harrisonburg, VA, this place is worth the stop. And if you want to order Red Rooster online, click here.
[MUSIC] = Here’s a new song I’m really digging from Shooter Jennings & Yelawolf: Rock And Roll Baby. Has a vibe like the Chasing Mavericks soundtrack.
[BOOK] =
Deep Six by Clive Cussler - I’ve been dialed in lately, going hard on work, business stuff, and other “serious” mental pursuits lately, so I’m using book time to get away from it all with a hit of fiction and adventure with another Dirk Pitt novel.
Set For Life: Dominate Money, Life and The American Dream by Scott Trench
This one was a recommendation… and for the life of me, I can’t recall who recommended it. My apologies to that person.
Here’s what the book description claims: “Listeners will learn how to:
Save more income - 50-plus percent of it, while still having fun
Double or triple your income in three to five years
Secure “real” assets and avoid “false” ones that destroy wealth.”
[PODCAST] =
Not a podcast. But I found this YouTube video very “shareworthy”.
We’re so lucky to have access to podcasts and YouTube that can serve as endless and free education - IF we watch the right videos. #drunkpeopledoingthings can even serve as a reasonable facsimile for college party life/shenanigans if we want to round the whole “college experience”.
Back to reality…
For audible & podcast peeps who listen at 1.5-2X speed, you can do the same thing on YouTube. Go to settings (the gear icon on the bottom of the video player) and change the speed to 1.5-2X.
Anyway… the guy in the video title is Peter Thiel.
If you don’t know the name, you probably should. He’s impacted your life quite a bit. He cofounded PayPal in 1999 with that Elon Musk character. Also was the first outside money invested in Facebook. So yeah… he’s got 25+ years of identifying and creating trends in technology. No big deal.
There is A LOT of information worth hearing in this video - no just BTC price predictions.
Why I’m Staying ON Instagram
Two weeks ago, my Instagram account was hacked… and I’m grateful for it!
UPDATE: As I write this on Friday 4/22, my account is still hacked. The hacker(s) changed all the passwords and associated email addresses, so I can’t use any of the normal recovery tools.
Instagram support has yet to respond.
Fortunately, I have some friends with connections inside of Facebook (IG’s parent company) and I was told on Wednesday that within 1-2 days we should be good to go… maybe later today is the end of this craziness. 🤷♂️🤞
A few hours after hi-jacking my account, my hacker posted a ransom note on my story, causing a deluge of emails and texts from good people looking out for me.
My thoughts:
Seriously, my biggest concern wasn’t getting my account back. It was letting people know that I had lost control of my account.
Then the hackers started harassing my friends.
That’s been the most frustrating part.
That upsets me more than not being able to post.
Aside from the frustration with the harassment (that I am helpless to stop) and the complete lack of response from Instagram support, I have thoroughly enjoyed not being on IG for a these last 2 weeks.
While I was temporarily off IG - even if it was for reasons outside of my control - I was happier and more productive.
With that realization, you might think that I’d decide to stay off IG completely, even if/when I reclaimed my account.
However, IG (and technology as a whole) has been a tool of incalculable value for me from a business - and personal - perspective.
Some of my closest friends are people that I have met through social media, hosting podcasts, writing my book…
IG has been a place where folks have reached out to set up speaking gigs with military bases, independent bookstores in foreign countries have inquired about carrying my book…
Not to mention, the questions I’ve been able to answer and impact that has had on others. The friendships gained…
When I think about all the people I know, opportunities I’ve had over the last 5-10 years, I’d have to say 70-90% have come through social media in some way, shape or form.
The connectivity afforded by technology is truly amazing.
So despite the downside that exists with social media due to the inevitable unintended consequences or rapid technological innovation, I’m going to continue to avail myself to the opportunities that this technology presents.
Going forward:
IG will remain an open account, BUT, I will most likely treat it like my website. i.e. something that I don’t check every day, but serves an important function in interfacing with the world.
Once the account is restored, I will not remain logged in - forcing myself to enter my password every time I want check the Gram. This introduces an element of friction, ensuring that my interaction with the platform is intentional, rather than mindless scrolling.
I will also look for other ways to leverage technology & broadcasting. Stay tuned here. I may continue to move more and more communication to this platform.
Now, let’s talk about what I learned from Tony Dungy this week 😀
